It’s ironic that a large part of psychotherapeutic work is around trying to convince people that their perceived ‘abnormal’ feelings and behaviours are a completely ‘normal’ reaction to a set of, often very difficult life circumstances. For instance, why wouldn’t someone have a generalised feeling of persistent anxiety and low mood, when they have to live in what seems like a crazy and confusing world? In therapy, we can work toward a more accepting and benevolent view of ourselves. We can explore who you truly are and where you might truly want to go in life, without the harsh inner voices of the past. We can work together to help you identify self-defeating patterns so that you can find agency for change. Whatever your problems, whether you’re experiencing more severe trauma or just struggling with every day life, therapy can help. Whatever your difficulties, weird thoughts or feelings, we just need to sort things out a bit. This is the first step toward clearer understanding.

After training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, I went into news broadcasting at the BBC World Service. Later, I spent 9 years in government Scrutiny and although I enjoyed the democratic process, after a considerable period of self-reflection and a revaluation of my life, I went on to train, and found meaning in working, as a psychotherapist.

I’m a friendly, down-to-earth counsellor and life coach with a broad range of experience in helping people who want change in their lives. Whether you’re dealing with overwhelming emotions, experiencing relationship or work challenges or just feeling stuck, I’m here to support you.

I’m an integrated therapist which means I’m trained in a variety of counselling therapies, providing individualised support for every client.

I offer a free 30 minute initial consultation before our first session which gives you a chance to share a little about what’s going on for you and I can answer any questions you have. My aim is to bring hope and optimism to your life, and with compassion and understanding, work alongside you so you can overcome your challenges now and manage your problems.

Please note that, from October, I will see clients face-to-face on Mondays during the day and online Tuesday mornings. I don’t work evenings or any other days.

By ‘psychotherapy’, I mean a relationship characterised by attempts at: truthfulness, apt trust, straightforwardness, accountability, understanding, vulnerability, care-taking, assertiveness, respect, self-knowledge, courage, dignity, acceptance, challenge, honesty, and forgiveness. Its aim is inner change, growth, and relief from those painful repeated experiences stemming from within rather than only from life circumstance. My approach is ‘psychodynamic’ – i.e. I’ll at least sometimes focus on the ways in which you unconsciously tend to get in your own way in your relationships with yourself, with me, and with the other people in your life. This involves helping you attend to, bear with, understand, and own – rather than deflect from – your anxieties.

Clinical supervision is offered for those interested in deepening their therapeutic practice through reading the transference and countertransference, bringing the whole self to the therapeutic relationship, developing clarity and rigour, and drawing on the true moral and emotional potentiality of a therapeutic relationship. By profession I’m a chartered Clinical Psychologist registered by the British Psychological Society (no. 147832) and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (no. PYL23937).

For me, therapy is about taking a genuine interest in my client’s life and how they experience it, being present, non-judgemental and empathic. I subscribe to the Gestalt paradox that says change comes about when we learn to be who we are and stop trying to be something else.

Every way of being has meaning and holds interest in therapy. We might sometimes focus on the content of your story or history (recent or past) but will also focus on your way of being – that is, how you think or act or make sense of and meaning in the world, how you experience and manage the world physically, what and who matters to you, what is missing from your life or how you stop yourself from being fully you. In terms of training, I am influenced by gestalt and existential theory and themes. This feels like a blend of eastern and western philosophy, often paradoxical but also challenging and grounding too.

There is no fixed model and within safe boundaries, we are free to experiment and develop the therapy sessions based on our unique experiences of them.
